Electronic Business in Construction - Getting more value out of the supply chain

BuildingSMART held a workshop on 21 October 2010 at BDP's offices in London, to discuss how organisations can get more value out of the supply chain. There were eight delegates, covering a wide range of perspectives: architecture and engineering, software development, and consultancy.

The workshop was led by Kevin Smith and Andrew Hudson – both involved in buildingSMART’s CITE activities – who gave presentations. The first covered the problem of silos of information in the construction process. There was a discussion about why these silos existed and how the silos could be broken down.

The second presentation looked at the trading messages standards that are currently available and being developed. It also summarised the use of the current standards elsewhere in Europe and worldwide, and what had happened to drive the adoption of those standards in those countries. In almost all cases a significant driver was promotion by the respective government.

This presentation was followed by further discussion that included the opportunities presented by BIM and how trading messages might interact with a BIM. A further meeting of the group present at the workshop is planned (date to be confirmed). Other organisations are to be invited to attend with a view to setting up a pilot implementation to demonstrate the benefits of using trading message standards during the tendering and construction phases, both between organisations and also inside an organisation.
